
Your body doesn’t always move the same way from one hour to the next.
That familiar morning stiffness, for instance, or the tight feeling when you climb out of your car after a long drive, often comes from how your tissues have responded to the positions and pressures you’ve been in.
These shifts are a normal part of how your spine manages load across the day.
In chiropractic assessment, we pay attention to them because they help explain why movement can feel different after you’ve been resting or holding one posture for a while.
Viscoelasticity describes how certain tissues handle pressure over time, including how they adapt when load is applied and how they recover once that load is removed.
In the spine, this includes intervertebral discs, ligaments, and other soft tissues that support each segment. These tissues don’t behave like rigid materials. Instead, they gradually adapt when a load is applied and slowly return to their original state when that load is removed.
This time-dependent behaviour allows the spine to absorb forces and adjust to sustained positions without becoming overly rigid. It reflects how tissues respond to how long a load is applied, rather than how heavy that load is.
When you remain in one position for an extended period, such as sitting at a desk, spinal tissues begin to adapt to that posture. This process is often referred to as creep.
During creep, tissues gradually change shape under a constant load. The discs may redistribute fluid, and ligaments may settle into a slightly lengthened position.
When you first begin to move again, these tissues may feel less responsive. This is often experienced as stiffness, particularly when transitioning out of a prolonged position.
Once movement resumes, the process begins to reverse. Tissues start to regain their original shape as load is redistributed and fluid movement improves.
This is why gentle movement often helps reduce stiffness after inactivity. Repeated motion encourages tissues to become more responsive again, allowing movement to feel smoother and more natural.
The change isn’t immediate, but it tends to improve progressively as activity continues.
Chiropractic assessment considers how well spinal segments recover from sustained positions. If a joint remains less responsive after movement begins, it may indicate that local tissue behaviour isn’t as efficient as it could be.
Adjustments are used to encourage joint motion and support a more normal mechanical response in the surrounding tissues. By introducing controlled movement, they can help restore a more consistent pattern of adaptation and recovery.
As tissues respond more effectively, movement often feels less restricted and more predictable.
Regular variation in posture and movement helps maintain healthy viscoelastic behaviour. Changing position, taking breaks from sustained activity, and incorporating gentle movement throughout the day can all support this process.
When tissues adapt and recover efficiently, the spine is better able to manage everyday demands. This supports smoother transitions between rest and activity, reducing the sense of stiffness that can build over time.
