When you visit an acupuncturist, you might be surprised by how many questions we ask.
We will want to know about your sleep, your digestion, your mood, and your energy levels, even if you came in with a sore knee. This is because diagnosis in Chinese medicine is a holistic process that looks at how everything in the body is connected.
Our goal is to understand the pattern that links all your symptoms together.
It is a bit like detective work, gathering clues to uncover what lies beneath the surface. This approach helps us see the bigger picture of your health and create treatment that works with your whole system, not just one symptom.
Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) rests on four key foundations known as the Four Examinations. These are looking, listening and smelling, asking, and palpating. Together, they offer a complete picture of what is happening inside the body.
We begin by observing.
Your complexion, posture, and the brightness in your eyes all tell us about the state of your internal energy, or Qi. Even subtle details, like the way you move or sit, can reveal whether your energy is flowing freely or has become blocked.
We also listen to the quality of your voice and breathing.
A quiet, weak tone may suggest a deficiency, while a strong or agitated tone can point to excess. Through questioning, we gather details about your health history, emotions, and daily life. Every answer helps to shape a clearer view of your internal balance.
Two of our most refined tools are tongue and pulse diagnosis. Each offers unique insight into your internal landscape.
The tongue reflects the state of your internal organs. Its colour, shape, and coating tell us a great deal. A pale tongue may indicate Qi or Blood deficiency, while a red tongue can suggest Heat. A thick or greasy coating may point to Dampness or Phlegm accumulation.
Pulse diagnosis provides even more depth.
We feel the pulse at three positions on each wrist, each corresponding to different organs and functions. We assess not just the speed, but also the strength, rhythm, and quality.
A wiry pulse may reflect tension or stagnation, while a weak pulse can signal a deficiency. These subtle qualities tell us how energy moves through your body and where imbalances may lie.
The aim of diagnosis in Chinese medicine is not to give a Western medical label. Instead, it is to identify what we call a pattern of disharmony.
This pattern describes how your body’s internal systems have drifted out of balance.
For example, two people might both experience headaches. One could have a pattern of Liver Yang rising, often linked with stress, while the other might have a pattern of Blood deficiency, resulting from fatigue or overwork. The symptom is the same, but the cause is completely different.
By recognising the unique pattern that applies to you, we can create treatment that directly addresses the root cause rather than simply relieving discomfort.
All the information gathered during your consultation comes together to form a complete picture of your health. This guides your treatment plan and ensures that every acupuncture point chosen has a clear purpose.
The process is deeply individual. No two people with similar symptoms will receive exactly the same treatment. By identifying your personal pattern of disharmony, we design a plan that helps your body restore balance in its own way and at its own pace.
Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine is a conversation between practitioner and patient, but also between practitioner and the body itself. We pay attention to what your body is communicating, often in ways that words cannot express.
This process honours your body’s natural intelligence. It recognises that symptoms are messages, not just problems to be fixed. When we understand what those messages mean, we can guide you towards genuine healing.
By reading the story your body tells, we help you move from imbalance to harmony and from discomfort to wellbeing.
