
Spinal stability requires coordination. Specifically, it relies on three interconnected systems called passive, active, and neural.
Individually, each of these systems contributes to how stability is produced. Together, they allow the spine to remain both stable and responsive as the demands on your body shift throughout the day.
During a chiropractic assessment, we look at how these systems interact during movement rather than focusing on any single structure in isolation.
The passive system includes the structural components of your spine. This includes the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and joint capsules.
Together, these tissues form the framework of each spinal segment. They define the boundaries of your range of motion and act as the baseline for your stability.
While these components don’t actively generate force, they do provide resistance as the joint approaches the limits of its range. This helps guide movement and prevents excessive motion under load.
The passive system also influences how forces are distributed through the spine. When functioning well, it allows load to be shared evenly across multiple segments rather than concentrated in one area.
The active system is made up of the muscles surrounding the spine. These muscles do generate force and provide dynamic support during movement and changes in posture.
Some muscles create larger, more visible movements, while others work at a deeper level to control individual segments. The deeper muscles continuously adjust to help guide motion and maintain stability.
This ongoing activity feeds into the wider active system.
So, rather than switching on and off, it operates at varying levels depending on the task, allowing the spine to remain supported without becoming overly rigid.
The neural system coordinates the activity of both passive and active structures. It receives continuous sensory input from joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues, then adjusts muscle activation in response.
This process happens automatically and very quickly. It allows the body to respond to small changes in position, load, or direction without conscious effort.
Clear, consistent input is important here. When the signals from a joint are accurate, the nervous system can coordinate muscle activity more precisely, supporting smooth and controlled movement.
These three systems don’t operate independently. Stability emerges from their interaction, rather than from any single structure working alone.
If one system contributes less, the others often compensate. For example, if passive structures provide less resistance, muscles may increase their activity to maintain control. This helps preserve stability, but it can also make movement feel more effortful over time.
In a well-balanced system, no single structure carries more load than necessary. Instead, responsibility is shared, allowing movement to remain efficient and coordinated.
Chiropractic assessment looks at how these systems are working together during movement. Rather than focusing on a single structure, the aim is to understand how well the system as a whole is functioning.
If a spinal segment isn’t moving as clearly as it should, it can influence how muscles activate and how load is distributed. This may lead to subtle changes in coordination, even if overall movement is still possible.
Adjustments are used to improve joint motion and the quality of input from that segment. As this input becomes more consistent, the nervous system can better coordinate muscle activity, helping restore a more balanced contribution across all three systems.
When the passive, active, and neural systems are working in balance, the spine can remain stable without unnecessary effort. Movement feels smoother, and the body adapts more easily to changes in load or position.
This balance allows the spine to provide a steady foundation while still remaining responsive. It supports controlled, efficient movement across a wide range of everyday activities.
